New Journal 13 – The winery bike ride

Every wine tasted good that day. Maybe that was due to the thirst we’d develop while cycling. I’m not sure if cycling while under the influence of alcohol is a great idea, but every year tourists take to the roads on two wheels and pedal their way around the vineyards and wineries of Mendoza.

It was a beautiful day and the roads weren’t too busy. In each winery we were given an interesting tour by guides who seemed very passionate about wine. We learned about the ‘philosophy’ of certain wines, and more importantly, I got to drink some.

The main reason for going there, for me at least, was to get a few shots of the dark wine cellars we’d heard so much about. The first place we went to, Weinert, proved to have exactly what I was looking for: long, dark cellars with huge wooden casks, filled to the brim with wine.

They had no problem with me using a tripod – an added bonus.

The day was an extremely relaxing one. At a snail’s pace, we only covered around 10km all day. We also found a nice piece of grass on which to have a picnic.

We’re enjoying the calmness of Mendoza before we’re immersed in the typical hustle and bustle of a capital city. Our arrival to Santiago has been delayed because the border crossing is closed due to bad weather. Hopefully it’ll open up in the next few days.

Today’s Photo – An old wine cellar

The fronts of the casks and the metal rims, in real life, have amazing detail that the camera just couldn’t capture. I wanted to try and draw some of that detail out while creating a darker atmosphere throughout the cellar.
